However, when the cascade becomes interrupted, wounds fail to heal in a timely manner, resulting in chronic non-healing wounds (ulcers). Over the years, a variety of measures have been attempted in the treatment of non-healing wounds, including a range of different dressing products, drugs and devices. However, not all wounds respond to the above modalities of treatment and, consequently, non-healing, refractory wounds continue to be a significant burden in the hospital as well as the community.

متن کاملComparison of traditional and modern dressings in healing surgical wounds
Up to two centuries ago patients were lucky to survive even minor surgical interventions without contracting life-endangering infections, and having to endure extreme distress. Such advances highlighted the importance of clean dressing and sterility. Lint, gauze and cotton rapidly replaced older types of dressings. Almost a century later another major advance occurred when Winter defined the ph...

This is the first installment of 2 articles that discuss the biology and pathophysiology of wound healing, review the role that growth factors play in this process, and describe current ways of growth factor delivery into the wound bed. Part 1 discusses the latest advances in clinicians' understanding of the control points that regulate wound healing. Importantly, biological similarities and di...
متن کاملThe Wound Microbiome: Modern Approaches to Examining the Role of Microorganisms in Impaired Chronic Wound Healing.
Significance: Bacterial burden is believed to play a significant role in impaired wound healing of chronic wounds and the development of infection-related complications. The standard of care in the clinic relies upon cultivation-dependent methods to identify microorganisms. These assays are biased toward microorganisms that thrive in isolation under laboratory conditions. Recent Advances: Signi...
